Big prep for the big day – How to be your best bridal self?

As the countdown to your d-day has begun, you have started a whole lot of preparations for your wedding trousseau, jewellery and a million other different things. However, at this moment, it is important that as a bride to be you pay utmost care to your body from head to toe. You want to walk around the sacred fire, glowing as luminously as the flames solemnizing your wedding rites. Now, that will take some hard work. But we want to make it easy for you in this step by step guide of bridal self preparation. Don’t worry, it isn’t all hard work, but is also a lot of pampering!

Here goes the quick list of things to do as a bride to be:

Watch what you eat, and that’s not just for your weight

Super foods such as almonds, cucumbers, spinach, high citrus fruits, green veggies contain omega oils that will give your skin the extra shine with every passing day. Cut down on your caffeine, salt and sugar. And while all your friends would want to party more with you, look out for alcohol consumption. A cocktail once in a while will do. Beer every day, no way!

Be a water loving bride

Consciously drink more water than you usually do. The elixir of life is also the elixir of beauty and most of your skin problems and bloating issues resolve faster if you drink enough water. All the stress and running around may mean that it becomes a difficult task to do so, so just in case carry a bottle around, and install a drinking reminder app.

Rapunzel needs her Vitamin B and deep conditioning

 hair wash 4

Your hair will be one of your best accessories on your wedding. Make sure you give them the love and devotion they rightfully deserve. Food rich in vitamin B will bring out your hair’s natural shine. Include low fat dairy, seafood, liver, oats, eggs, and almonds in your diet. Bring home some biotin supplements too.

Deep conditioning Hair pack ideas

Also, give your hair regular deep conditioning treatments at a salon of your choice. At home, give yourself the love of regular oiling and DYI hairpacks. More on that in a blog later, but for now a quick google search will throw some amazing hair pack ideas using kitchen ingredients.

Don’t forget to cover your hair while stepping out!

Let’s get you luscious lips

Apply a sunscreen of SPF 30 on your lips while stepping out. At night, before going to sleep, rub some warm ghee with a few drops of olive oil to remove discoloured patches and bring softness back to your lips. You can also exfoliate your lips with brown sugar once in a while with a soft bristle brush.

Put your best feet forward

Walking down the aisle in a beautiful lehanga, with cracked heels and rough feet? Nah. Don’t rely on last minute pedicure to take care of your feet. Start taking care of your feet months in advance. Schedule regular pedicures at your salon, and keep doing simple home pedicure rituals to fill in the gaps. A grandma’s secret to lotus feet – apply ample amount of petroleum jelly before going to sleep

Dream bridal body needs work

Workouts should become a regular part of your regime, even if you are fit. Because not only the sweating is a great way to get rid of toxins, but a little toning up will make your wedding ensemble look flawless on you.

As far as the skin of your body is concerned, exfoliate religiously. Pay extra attention to your joints, especially elbows. Get a skin specific moisturizer, and for this you should perhaps talk to your salon advisor.

Apply a little aloe vera gel with cold pressed coconut right after a shower over the entire body for super nourished skin. A daily multivitamin will work the additional magic you need, especially if you are dieting to your wedding.

Dear face, let’s face it

 Spa Facial Mask.Dayspa

Let’s face it, nothing will contribute to your bridal look more than your face. And no foundation can do absolute wonders if there are pronounced acne and blemishes on your face. Here is the 4-step routine you need to follow without fail – cleanse, exfoliate, tone, moisturize. The super foods we mentioned earlier are just as important to getting a healthy facial skin. Also, go for regular facial schedules, after talking thoroughly to your salon expert about your skin type and the problems your facial skin faces.

Don’t forget to Tangerine up your wedding prep!

Hair Washing Basics

We all love the salon-style hair, emerging out of the salon we all love our joyfully bouncy hair! How if we could get this hair after every wash – afterall, the salon stylists use no magic but a tried and tested technique to give you that beautiful hair everytime.

A little more attention to how you wash your hair, a few tricks, a few knicks there, and there will be a helluva difference your hair feels and stays after a hair wash.

Here are 5 handy tips to say goodbye to bad hair days forever.

1.Rinse your hair thoroughly, and rinse with warm water

hair wash 3.jpg

Hair should be thoroughly wet before you add your shampoo. Preferably do it with lukewarm water. Hot water opens up your hair cuticles, which will facilitate the removing of dirt or product trapped in hair. Also, the oils in your scalp get loosened and absorbed by the cuticle. Make sure the hair is only tepid and not hot. Hot wait can strip your hair of moisture.

2. Lather up from roots onwards. Be gentle.

hair wash 5.jpg

The hair closest to the scalp is the youngest and will inevitably be the oiliest, and you need to show your love there. The best way to lather up is from roots to ends.  Be gentle. Don’t pile your hair on top and scrub it, as this will only create knots. Work the shampoo gently down to the ends of your hair and rinse thoroughly.
P.S – If you use a product heavy shampoo, use a clarifying shampoo from time to time to free your hair from the buildup.

3. Conditioning is trickier than you think

hair wash 4

Ever wondered why your scalp feels heavy and itchy after a wash. It’s probably you are using conditioner there. Start conditioning from the mid-lengths and go well to the ends. Comb your hair with a wide toothed comb, and let the conditioner work its magic for a while, at least a minute, before you rinse it off. The longer the better.

4. Finish with a cold water rinse

hair wash 2
Cold water will shut the cuticle tight, sealing the shingle-like outer layer, which will cause it to reflect the most light and give off the most shine.

5. Skip towel drying. Let air work its way.

hair wash 6

Hair is sensitive and fragile after a wash. Avoid rubbing with towel or rubbing it dry. Instead, simply press a towel on your hair.

For best results, don’t shampoo your hair every day. Wash your hair on alternative days, and make sure to get regular hair trims, and hair spa to maintain shiny and healthy hair. Get in touch with Tangerine to know more about hair care, or just in case you want to inquire about getting yourself a new hairstyle.

Tangerine’s winter guide to wellness and beauty

Ugg boots are out, so are jackets, mittens, stoles and cardigans. And we reckon, lip balm, cold cream and jars of body lotion. Everyone’s favourite season is here, and while you enjoy the nippy chill in the air, here are a few quick tips to remain warm and well this winter.

good looks winter

Beauty goals this winter

Moisturize like your life depends on it

moisturize 1

Go ahead. Take a dollop extra if you want.

Stock up on your favourite creams, and use copiously, especially after you have done a cleansing ritual. Dry skin is one of the few issues with winter months, but a quality moisturizer is the perfect solution to all chapped woes. Richer, thicker skin creams usually fit the bill for winter skincare. Do keep a lookout for breakouts – using incompatible brands can lead to blocked pores. For holistic care of your skin, visit Tangerine for skincare treatments. Winter demands you go that extra mile.

Don’t forget to drink water

It’s easy to forget to drink water when one isn’t sweating. But the body, especially the skin in particular, requires hydration, even in the coldest of winters. Install a water reminder app, or just keep a bottle in your sight. Add a dash of lemon for the extra detox effect.

water drinking app

Go smart. Use reminder apps to drink water regularly.

Take care of those locks Rapunzel

Hair can get distressed in winter, especially under a woollen cap worn over a long duration. Soothe your stricken mane with warm coconut oil onto the scalp. Leave the oil overnight and then shampoo+condition in the morning. For specialised hair care, check out Tangerine’s exhaustive range of hair products and hair treatment procedures. Consult our hair expert for more details.

winter hair

Winter doesn’t mean gloomy hair. Take extra care of those tresses in these months.

Turn down the heat

Keep the shower temperature as lukewarm as you can afford. Steaming hot water strips your skin and hair of natural oils, and leaves you itchy and dry. It doesn’t mean that you have to punish yourself with icecold water every time you bathe. Just keep your bathing time short and sweet to minimize the damage. Let’s shift bathroom singing to some other venue, shall we?

For skin right out of tropics, you musy use lukewarm bathing water.

Under all the leather and wool, wear something soft and gentle

Dressing up stylishly during the winters is always a cakewalk. Of course, a cake with lot of layers. We all love to spend hours in front of the mirror mixing and matching between all the sassy boots, decadent jackets, stylish scarves and so much more. But make sure the innermost layer is a soft and gentle garment. Invest in premium thermalwear, and avoid abrasive woollens in touch with your skin.

winter layers

Stay comfortable outside, and within.

The guide to bob hairstyle

No prohibition on being stylish! 1920s bob

No prohibition on being stylish!         1920s bob

The hairstyle of choice for stylish women since ages, the bob is not surprisingly, back in flavour. Yesteryear fashionistas like Elizabeth Taylor, Coco Chanel carried it with elan in their times. Their hair was fashioned in what is today known as classic bob. Chic, short, neat. However, like most artistic expressions, modern hair stylists have interpreted bob and made it a relevant, fashionable, and unabashedly sexy.

How to get the right bob cut?

Beginning with technicalities n its classic form, bob hairstyle is a A-line cut, referring to the hair’s perimeter that frames the face in a concave manner and curls towards the chin. The hair is usually shorter in the back, and long angulars in the front.

Variations come in the form of texturing (inverted or graduated bob, where stacking is done, typically to add volume). The image below is a typical variation – layering along with dark highlights towards the ends to create an overall graduated look.

Layered bob with dark highlights

More than just the cut, the right colour job will accentuate your look and give your bob the edge you want. Let this avant garde experimental bob serve as the perfect inspiration for you.

A word of advice

If you have super fine hair, make sure you head to a good stylist – she/he will be required to work on texturing your hair and creating layers over the bob look, so the end result doesn’t end up looking stringy and flat. Also, a classic A-line puts all the focus on the face, without doing any of the camouflage that other hairstyles give, therefore it is recommended only for women who are confident with their face taking absolute prominence. Blessed with a good jawline? Go for it!

Bob it like Beckham

Bob it like Beckham

Going short can be a difficult decision for most women. Most importantly, it shouldn’t be impulsive. Post-breakup-style-change and my-best friend-got-it-so-i-want-it-too are univocally discouraged. Take your time to browse through internet, and figure out your “type”. It will be good to go to the stylist well prepared with a few pictures. Pinterest references FTW!

The choice of movers and shakers

The look exudes in equal measures feminine grace and self assured power, which is why working women often wear this hairstyle to create a polished personality. Young corporate hotshots such as Lakshmi Venu (TVS group scion) pull off this look, that gels and aids the background and stature.

Bollywood has taken well to Bob too. The beautiful Sonakshi Sinha chopped off her long waves to sport a short LOB (Long bob cut). Former Miss World Lara Dutta too was seen wearing a shoulder length bob hair cut.

Go for short. Go for stylish.

The versatility of bob is such that it suits a wide range of face cuts and hair type. Long bob, short bob, wavy bob, straight bob – the possibilities are endless. Experimenting with bob hairstyle is both a work of art and technical prowess. We at Tangerine believe every woman deserves to get a oomphy Bob at some point. Pick up your phone, book an appointment, and take a few deep breaths. You are about to get the awesomest makeover ever!

Choosing the right comb

The comb right for your hair type?

Ummm. Not too sure.

That’s the story of most women out there, who give their hair the right attention and love. Yet, between all the haircare routines, they forget one crucial thing – choosing the right hair comb. Different types of combs and brushes serve different purposes. It doesn’t take a hairstylist to know them and use them judiciously.

Let’s find out.

Paddle brush/Cushion brush

The bristles sit on a cushion that allows airflow. These brushes contour your head and give you a massage while brushing. Usually rectangular or oval, these brushes can be made from wood or plastic. This is your every day go-to brush for styling. This will not give too much blow-out, but will get rid of frizz and make your hair smooth and manageable.

These brushes come with either natural bristles (made of boar hair) or synthetic bristles (nylon). While natural bristles give you shine, synthetic bristles avoid frizz. Depending on your hair type, you can choose between the bristles. If your hair gets oily quickly after hair wash, stick to synthetic bristles. Look for brushes with ceramic ion technology for extra frizz control.

Choosing right brush, buying right brush

Round brush

Round brushes are ideal to gain volume, and perhaps a little bit of curl. They come in different sizes, however the thumb rule is – smaller the brusher, tighter the curl. Larger the brush, higher the volume. Here is a small tip – do a cold air blow-drying before you brush – this will set the style.

Rat tail comb

This comb comes with a long handle making sectioning hair super easy. Always a part of any professional hair stylist’s kit, and no reason why it shouldn’t be a part of your kit too! Whether it is funky braids or creating flawless curls, it is super easy to do this with the fine teeth of this comb. Added tip – use the end of the rat tail to remove clips and accessories, instead of risking those lovely manicured nails.

Wide Tooth Comb

This is a must in every girl’s bathroom closet. After stepping out of shower, a wide tooth comb is what you reach out for. NEVER use a fine tooth comb on wet hair. You will pull and stretch your strands, leaving them week and easily broken. Instead, go for a wide tooth comb—it detangles knots without tearing your hair.

This was created in the 50s, when teased hair became popular. Great for creating volume, teasing comb have teeth very closely spaced, which is great for experimentation.

Rake comb

The Rake comb resembles a garden rake and is a great way to untangle long messy hair. You can rake through your hair with minimum pain and loss. This is ideal for coarse or curly manes, since this guides gently through stubborn hair. As far as styling is concerned rake comb is great for adding height to your hair.

Five quick tips of using comb/brush correctly:

  • Always brush your hair before stepping into shower to avoid tangled hair.
  • Damp hair should be combed very carefully, ideally with a wide tooth comb.

    Combing after shower

  • Comb your hair at least twice a day. Combing/brushing is an important ritual in hair care. Combing maintains good blood circulation, spreads the oil across the scalp and makes your hair healthy.
  • Clean your brush/comb by keeping it in a basin of water, with a little washing liquid and antiseptic in it. Later, rinse with clean water.

Length is back, and it is hippie!

First things first. There is a definite trend gravitating towards cascading locks in all spring-summer shows – Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Emilio Pucci, . Boho waves, as carefree the phrase may sound, requires effort, and we suggest a soon-visit to the salon to get the perfectly undone tussled look. You don’t want to be the prim and proper lady who sits wondering about her hair, you are the woman who goes out and lives it up!

Ride the pony

Who could have thought that the old school ponytail will be a favourite with stylists this year! But, indeed it is! In an uber-cool avatar, ponytails have come back completely re-invented, and is your handy hack to look chic and stylish, effortlessly. Look out for variations – dishevelled, sleek, softly crimped, there are many sub-styles you can try out according to your hair length and texture.

Braids are going strong

Never underestimate the humble braid. International fashion shows are bringing in line after line with eclectic braided styles. We let the pictures speak. And yes, we are in awe, and want, want, want you to try different pleated styles out!

Highlighting what matters

Ombré ruled the roots in 2014. While the trend has not faded altogether, 2015 is all about ecaille. The French word for “tortoiseshell” (we frankly don’t know where THAT bit came from), ecaille is all about dark, caramel tones paired with warm honeys. Babylights that fit your face-frame, complimented by softer tones on the side. We recommend these ladies for pulling it off well – Jessica Alba, Blake Lively, and the ever radiant Katie Holmes. Of course, the Indian skin works differently for highlights, but if you want the truly international look, the right stylist will create the perfect adaptation according to your skin and hair tone.

Five post Holi tips to care for your hair and skin

Back from the outdoors? We are sure you had a good time getting drenched, splashed and sprinkled with the colours of rainbow and beyond. But now that the festivities are over, the ordeal to remove the colours and clean yourself up begins.

So just in case you need a few handy tips, here are a few.

Get your glowing skin and shining hair back with these easy tips

Get your glowing skin and shining hair back with these easy tips

1. Rinsing your hair

Don’t apply shampoo directly. First rinse off as much colour as you can directly with water. Chemicals in the colours can react with the shampoo and cause damage, so first remove as much as you can.

Rinse your hair with cold water before shampooing

2. A quick hair mask

Make a simple hair mask with curd, ripe banana, egg yolk and few fenugreek seeds. Keep your hair masked for 30 minutes. Honey, olive oil can also be used for deep conditioning to rejuvenate hair after the colour onslaught.

Easy home-made hair mask to rejuvenate hair after Holi

3. Removing colours

First stand under cold water for a few minutes, follow it by softly rubbing with olive oil dipped in cotton. If the colours are stubborn, do not rub or scrub. It can cause breaks in the epidermal cells, and cause long term dryness. Use curd to soften the skin. Here is an effective exfoliating mix to bring the colours off.

1 tbsp of gram flour, bran, sandalwood powder, fresh cream, olive oil, orange juice, and a little turmeric powder. This power packed mixture exfoliates, moisturises and cleanses your skin, and will not just bring off all the colours but leave your face and body with a soft glow.

4. Caring for skin in the days to come

Apply Multani mitti pack every alternate day to keep your skin radiant and supple.

multani mitti (fuller's earth)

5. Simple is good

Don’t go for skin treatments like waxing, facials or apply heavy make-up for two to three days after Holi. Your skin is sensitive and these treatments can cause an irritation. Stick to your standard moisturizer and avoid anything much! Of course, next weekend don’t forget to book your appointment for a thorough pampering session at Tangerine the Boutique Salon

P.S – In case you are facing any itch, redness or irritation while taking the colours off, rush to the doctor immediately.

We hope you had a good Holi!

Happy Holi!
